The Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) targeted 154 prominent figures, alleging that they have “systematically maligned the party” through their reporting on the contentious Sinan Ateş murder case.

Barış Terkoğlu, a columnist for Cumhuriyet, reported that MHP has filed a controversial request to join the Sinan Ateş murder case as an “injured party.”

In their request, the MHP included an extensive list of 154 individuals, demanding the court to summon them for questioning.

The list comprises prominent political leaders, journalists, legal experts, and academics, including Murat Yetkin of YetkinReport.

The MHP’s application alleged that the names in the list “have systematically maligned the party in alliance with global powers.”

The party claimed that “separatist, liberal, Marxist, and FETÖ-affiliated structures” have targeted the party through coordinated efforts over Sinan Ateş murder case.

The court rejected the request.

Bahçeli’s Sinan Ateş concern

The list has sparked further debate about MHP leader Devlet Bahçeli’s dissatisfaction with the handling of the Sinan Ateş murder case.

Sinan Ateş, the former leader of the Grey Wolves, the youth wing of the MHP, was killed in 2022 in Ankara. The case has been particularly contentious due to allegations involving individuals connected to the MHP.

It has also caused friction between the MHP and its political ally, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s the Justice and Development Party (AKP). [Read: “Sinan Ateş murder: The catalyst for MHP-AKP tensions”]

“Currently, from Tolgahan Demirbaş to Emre Yüksel, the defendants, and from Olcay Kılavuz to Ahmet Yiğit Yıldırım, a significant portion of the suspects (of the Sinan Ateş case) are from the MHP and the Grey Wolves leadership. It is notable that the MHP is complaining not about these individuals whose names are involved in the murder, but about those questioning the murder. It is clear that the MHP leadership is trying to prevent discussions about the murder,” Terkoğlu wrote.
