On the sidelines of the congress, Özgür Özel is expected to meet German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Spanish Prime Minister and President of the Socialist International Pedro Sanchez.

Özel took the leadership seat of the main opposition in November. His visit came as Germany-Turkish relations were strained over the Gaza crisis. Turkish President Erdoğan who visited Berlin in November made harsh statements at a joint press conference with the German cancellor.

Accusing Germany of supporting Israel, Erdoğan said, “We do not owe Israel anything. If we were in debt, we could not speak so comfortably. But those who are in debt cannot speak comfortably. We did not go through the Holocaust.”

While criticizing European countries on Gaza, Erdoğan singled out Socialist International President Pedro Sanchez and said, “Spain’s approach is developing in a positive direction.”
