Turkish Cypriots hit ballot box for early elections

People of Turkish Republic of the Northern Cyprus (TRNC) hit the ballot box for early parliamentary elections. The results of the election will determine the new holders of 50 seats in the Assembly of the Republic. The voting will be the 15th parliamentary election held in the TRNC since 1974.

According to the preliminary results announced by the Supreme Board of Electors, ruling National Unity Party (UBP) lead the election with 36 percent votes as of Jan. 24 afternoon. The UBP is followed by Republican Turkish Party (CTP) with 32 percent, Democrat Party (DP) with 7 percent, Rebirth Party (YDP) with 6 percent and People’s Party (HP) received 6 percent.

In the election, 203,792 voters expected to vent to the polls however the voter turnout was announced as 55.43% by 5.30 p.m. local time (3:30 p.m. GMT), according to the election authority.
